Calling the crash "tragic," Ocean County Prosecutor Joseph Coronato and Toms River Police Chief Mitch Little said the investigation into who was possibly driving a 2014, 2015 or 2016 blue Infinity Q50 is ongoing as of Wednesday afternoon.
Further analysis revealed the car could also have been a late-model Nissan Altima with driver’s side front-end damage, the prosecutor’s office said Wednesday night.
Authorities said Ekarius was hit on Route 70 West near the Route 9 bridge around 11:10 p.m. on Tuesday. The driver then left the scene and is believed to have severe front-end damage, authorities said.
Ekarius was hit by additional vehicles, authorities said. Those vehicles remained at the scene and the drivers attempted to help Ekarius.
He was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:30 p.m.
Authorities said no witnesses of the initial crash were identified at the scene.
