On February 20, 2017 at approximately 10:30 AM, The Stafford Township Police Department responded to a single vehicle crash involving a black sedan that struck a utility pole. Preliminary investigation revealed the sedan being driven by Joshua R Handel, 20 years old of Manahawkin, NJ was traveling west on Route 72 approaching Lighthouse Drive. As the sedan approached Lighthouse Drive, it left the roadway and struck a utility pole.
As a result of the impact Mr. Handel was initially unconscious and sustained internal injuries. As police and medical personnel arrived on scene Mr. Handel regained consciousness. Mr. Handel was flown by MONOC 1 to the Atlantic City Trauma Center for further medical evaluation. The condition of Mr. Handel is unknown at this time.
Traffic on Route 72 was stopped and rerouted around the scene for approximately 30 minutes.
Ptl. Jillson is the investigating officer. Assisting on scene were the Stafford Township Volunteer Fire Company, the Stafford Township Volunteer EMS and the MONOC paramedics.
Mr. Handel received a summons for careless driving. This matter is pending a future court date in Stafford Township Municipal Court.
