Ice, Crashes Close Roads In Ocean, Monmouth On Saturday

Icy roads contributed to a number of serious crashes in Ocean and Monmouth counties on Saturday morning, according to Nixle alerts and other reports.

Temperatures that dropped into the teens overnight resulted in black ice. The Ocean County Sheriff’s office warned of the ice in a Nixle alert at 7:30 Saturday morning, and that was followed not long after by a Nixle alert from Brick Township police saying Beaverson Boulevard was closed due to a serious crash. Beaverson was reopened shortly after 10 a.m.

Howell Township police reported the eastbound ramp from Route 9 to Route 195 was closed just after 6 a.m. due to a serious crash on 195; according to witnesses the road reopened a few hours later but it was still very icy.

Neptune Police also tweeted about the icy conditions, saying they were causing numerous crashes.

Route 18 in Tinton Falls was closed due to icy conditions for a few hours as well, according to alerts. According to reports by Jersey Shore Hurricane News, the conditions caused several crashes on Route 18, as well as crashes in Toms River, Manchester and Berkeley Township.

The crash in Berkeley, which the Ocean County sheriff’s office said was serious, resulted in the closure of Route 9 in both directions for several hours both to investigate the crash and replace a broken utility pole.

Information on the extent of injuries was not immediately available from authorities.
