A Mack dump truck tangled in power lines overturned Friday night after, bringing down a utility pole and mangling the lines, police said.
The truck was traveling eastbound around 10:36 p.m. on Route 571 when its hydraulic arm on the bed suddenly raised in the air, Manchester police Capt. Todd Malland said.
The arm struck telephone wires strung between two utility poles across the roadway, Malland said. It pulled the wires with it, causing a utility pole to snap and the wires to drape across the road, according to Malland.
The truck also overturned near the intersection of Route 571 and Ridgeway Boulevard in the Ridgeway section of Manchester, police said.
The driver was able to exit the vehicle with the help of several bystanders, Malland said. He was then taken to Community Medical Center in Toms River for treatment of injuries that are not life-threatening.
No other vehicles were involved in the crash.
“The crash is still under investigation as investigators are attempting to determine whether or not the hydraulic arm activation was a mechanical malfunction or a negligent action taken by the driver,” Malland said.
